The Death of Free Content or the Bright Light of Subscription Fees?
Rupert Murdoch has been quoted as saying the following “The fact is there's not enough advertising in the world to go around to make all the websites profitable. We'd rather have fewer people coming to our website – but paying.” News Corp's Jonathan Miller said he envisions a future where at least some of the TV shows and movies on Hulu, the premium video site co-owned by News Corp. NBC Universal and Disney, will be available only to subscribers. Meanwhile Comcast's TV Anywhere trials are enabling cable subscribers to access television content online. Here in Canada, Rogers is launching a similar service where cable subscribers will have access to television content online. Are we witnessing a turn for the worse in the digital content industry or a tide of subscription fees which could boost the industry? Join moderator, Mark Greenspan as David Purdy, Vice President and General Manager Television Products of Rogers Cable, Ian Caminsky, Head of Business Development, YouTube, Google and Avner Ronen, CEO and Co-Founder of Boxee discuss the implications of, and alternatives to subscription fees.

There is no question about the explosive impact of the iPhone on the wireless industry. When it comes to users who embrace life on the go, having an all-in-one device makes sense both practically and economically. The iPhone may have started as an entertainment device, but its evolution has shaped the mobile world. Manufacturers are in a constant state of creation and re-creation, racing to make the next best portable computer of the phone world. As the Internet evolves, changing consumer behavior is having a direct impact on the types of systems and processes that media and marketing organizations must put in place to successfully reach target audiences. Tape-based workflows are being superseded by file-based workflows. Creative artifacts once deemed extraneous and left unmanaged are becoming critical intellectual property assets. Social networks and modern engagement styles are setting the bar higher for more compelling, immersive user experiences. Non-linear, digital distribution will ultimately characterize the manner in which a majority of media content is disseminated. A population with increasingly-sophisticated mobile devices will connect to a range of media-centric Cloud services, challenging and eventually leading to the obsolescence of many traditional services. Join us as we explore these trends, their implications for media and marketing organizations in the future, and the implied opportunity for digital media.
