"Why Now? Why is 3D Happening? One Word: Digital" - James Stewart
With a barrage of stunning visuals, from PSAs to a full-blown U2 concert documentary, James Stewart, President and Founder of Geneva Film Company, demonstrated how digital has taken 3D TV to whole new viewing experience. An eager BANFF audience experienced first hand that the future of TV is now - and that future is 3D.
Seeing the new visual experience as not simply a technological triumph, but the creation of a more intimate viewing experience for a more demanding audience; Stewart sees 3D TV as the third transition in the history of cinema (after the move to sound and then colour). Stewart sees a bright future where everything from gaming to mobile content will be delivered in 3D. Stewart noted that ESPN will broadcast 25 3D matches during the FIFA World Cup.
Highlights of Stewart?s video presentation included footage from a groundbreaking live broadcast of Rio?s Carnival. Joined onstage by DOP Alan Lennox (from another pioneering Canadian 3D company 3DCC), Alan demonstrated how existing infrastructure was incorporated into the 3D workflow. He then showed off a range of dynamic and increasing affordable camera solutions, including lightweight handheld cameras from Panasonic and Sony.
Ending his discussion with an overview of the growing number of broadcasters moving to deliver content in 3D, Stewart urged producers to jump onboard with 3D creation. "3D TV is now."
